Open casting call for biopic feature film 'Midnight Rider: The Gregg Allman Story'

Midnight Rider Casting Call

UPDATE 2-24-2014: This project has been put on hold indefinitely. New casting calls will be posted here as soon as filming resumes.

UPDATE: The Open Casting Call Scheduled for Sunday, February the 23rd has been cancelled at this time. Due to the tragic train accident that occurred on Thursday, the Open Call scheduled for Sunday, February 23rd has now been CANCELLED. Thank you to those that wished to come out and for your understanding at this time.

Film Allman, LLC and Unclaimed Freight Productions are getting ready to begin shooting a biopic feature film about the life of Gregg Allman called Midnight Rider.  The production has scheduled an open casting call seeking extras, and featured background actors. Experienced film crew members can submit resumes via email. Filming is set to begin on February 24th and run through March 27th in the Savannah, GA area.

Midnight Rider is a biopic on Gregg Allman, who was part of the Southern rock group the Allman Brothers, whose heyday was in the '60s and '70s with such songs as Ramblin' Man, Midnight Rider, Whipping Post and Jessica. Despite the success, Gregg Allman found himself beset by tragedy: His brother Duane Allman died in a motorcycle crash only two weeks after the band’s third album went gold. Less than 13 months later, bassist Berry Oakley was killed in another motorcycle accident. The hand of death followed him to his relationships: two girlfriends committed suicide after Allman broke up with them. Allman also married six times (once to Cher) and spent years in and out of rehab.

Starring in Midnight Rider: The Gregg Allman Story is Academy Award winner William Hurt playing the role of present-day Gregg Allman. Hurt recently wrapped shooting on the feature films Days and Nights starring opposite Allison Janney and Katie Holmes, and Winter's Tale starring alongside Russell Crowe, Will Smith, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Jennifer Connelly. Also starring in Midnight Rider is singer-songwriter Tyson Ritter playing the younger version of Gregg Allman. Vampire Academy star Zoey Deutch will play a groupie named Mae, and rising star Wyatt Russell will play Duane Allman.

Directors Guild of America DGA Award winner Randall Miller will direct from a screenplay that he wrote with three-time Daytime Emmy Award nominee Jody Savin. The screenplay is based on Gregg Allman's autobiography "My Cross to Bear", which made the New York Times Bestseller list and Rolling Stone Magazine's 25 Greatest Rock Memoirs of All Time list. William Hurt actually helped director Randall Miller's career in the beginning. Hurt made an anonymous financial donation to Miller's American Film Institute thesis film. And when Hurt's identity was revealed, he even agreed to do the voice-over on Miller's film. This is the first collaboration since for Hurt and Miller.

Randy Miller and Jody Savin will also produce under the banner of their production company Unclaimed Freight. Co-producing is Brad Rosenberger and Andre Danylevich. Greg Allman and his manager Michael Lehman are working closely with the production and will both serve as executive producers. Also executive producing is the same team behind the feature films CBGB and Savannah - Nick Gant, Don Mandrik, Jay Sedrish. Jim Tharpe rounds out the exec producers. Open Road Films will handle domestic distribution, while The Exchange will handling international sales.

Open casting call scheduled for new FX series 'Hoke'

I am assisting the casting director with getting word out about an open casting call for the new FX Productions and Deuce Three Productions television series Hoke starring Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti.

The series takes place in late 1970s Miami, and all types are needed. Stand-ins for Giamatti and Screen Actors Guild Award nominated actress and former Game of Thrones star Oona Chaplin are also being cast. Shooting will commence in February.

Hoke centers on veteran police officer Hoke Moseley (Giamatti) in 1978 Miami, and he's a mess. He's lost a lot of things in his life: his hair, his teeth, his wife, his partner, his belief in humanity. In exchange for all that, he's got a drinking habit, a smoker's rasp, and a cruddy hotel room - which he's about to lose. He's managed to hang onto his job and his life, but Hoke is a crap magnet - every crappy, rotten crime in the Miami-Dade area lands on Hoke's ashstrewn desk, and he feels like he spends his life in a gator-filled sewer from which there is no exit.

Also starring in Hoke is Oona Chaplin playing Ellita Sanchez, a sharp young homicide detective recently promoted from dispatcher to Hoke's new partner. John Carroll Lynch portrays Bill Henderson, an old-school Miami Detective and Hoke's former partner who is equally as miserable in the recently diversified department. Robert Wisdom plays Major Brownley, the head of the Miami PD Homicide Squad, who has a long history with Hoke and his antics. Jordi Molla has been cast as Armando Zuniga, a sociopath Cuban who arrives on the shores of Miami in the rumpled, faded clothing of a peasant Cuban refugee and integrates into the city posing as a famous poet of the Cuban people. Golden Globe Award nominee Tammy Blanchard rounds out the series regular cast as Loretta Hickey, the striking mother of a murdered drug addict who Hoke comes across while investigating the case.

Paul Giamatti will executive produce with Daniel Carey under the banner of their production company Touchy Feely Films, which signed a two-year, first-look deal with FX Productions in 2013. In addition to writing the series and directing the pilot episode, Academy Award nominee Scott Frank will also executive produce. Academy Award winner Curtis Hanson will exec produce along with his Deuce Three Productions partner and Primetime Emmy Award nominee Carol Fenelon.
